Looking to buy the an electric chainsaw? Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Chainsaw reviews are pretty much all over the internet with many people giving varying opinions on what is the best.
But anyone who knows anything about machines like chainsaws understand there’s no such thing as “one size that fits all” or “perfect in every way.”
It’s especially true when it comes to electric-powered models that accommodate so many sophisticated parts. I’ve used my fair share of chainsaws, and let me tell you—rounding up just 7 best is a LOT of work!
Still, since it’s my passion to lead you towards making better choices, I don’t mind one bit writing these reviews.
The products in my guide are efficient, eco-friendly, easy-to-use, and come at prices affordable by everyone. Well, almost everyone.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look.
The Best Electric Chainsaws of 2018
1. Greenworks 20312 40V 16-Inch Cordless Chainsaw with 4.0 AH Battery
From hedge trimmers, pressure washers to power tools, chainsaws and more, Greenworks has got them all. And their products are not only high-quality, but they also offer great value. So, it’s no surprise why this 16-inch 40V Cordless Chainsaw is one of the best-selling products on the market.
Can it be your next buy? Let’s find out.
- It comes equipped with a brushless motor which ensures not only extended life but also more torque and power. In addition to the extra power, the motor reduces vibration by up to 70%.
- You can interchange the batteries between other GreenWorks 40V battery operated products.
- It comes with an electronic chain brake and low kickback chain to give you added protection.
- This chainsaw features auto chain tensioning along with an automatic oiler.
- The GreenWorks 20312 chainsaw comes with a 4 Year Warranty.
Although I’m quite experienced with home and gardening tools, I never really had this chainsaw on mind while I was preparing a list of products for this review. In fact, the credit goes to my colleague Martha who happened to peek at my list.
She suggested I try out the GreenWorks 16-inch cordless chainsaw for two reasons – one, it’s smooth and powerful, and two, it’s really affordable. And I must say, thanks to her advice, I was quite smitten by this product.
After spending a day or two clearing up my backyard, along with a few neighbors’, I felt that the GreenWorks 20312 had more than enough power to cut medium-sized trees. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet and smooth this product was.
But the power isn’t the most impressive part of this chainsaw, that honor would have to go to the battery life. In fact, the 4 Ah battery can last almost 3 hours of standard use (bear in mind, that doesn’t mean continuous usage).
As for the other features, I’d say they work well, but, aren’t anything exceptional. Although, I do like the auto chain tensioning system. Needless to say, it’s not perfect; nothing is. One of the issues I noticed with this chainsaw is that it leaks bar oil if your store it in the tank for an extended period.
Now, according to the GreenWorks manual, you aren’t supposed to keep any oil in the tank before you stow away your chainsaw. But, even while I was carrying it to a nearby location with oil, I noticed the same problem. I guess part of the reason for that were the bad road conditions. Anyhow, I’d suggest not to keep any oil in the tank unless you’re ready to chop down trees.
Apart from that, I noticed that cutting trees at an angle is a little tricky. But, it’s nothing significant.
- Impressive battery life
- Smooth and powerful to operate
- Offers excellent value
- Comes with a long warranty
- Cutting trees in a wedge shape can get a little tricky
If you want to see it in action, check out the video below!
Sure, the GreenWorks 20312 comes with a few cons. But, it’s nothing significant to dethrone its top spot. In my opinion, if you’re looking for a powerful and smooth cordless chainsaw which offers great value, this is as good as it gets.
2. Worx WG303.1 14.5 Amp 16-Inch Electric Chainsaw
Like GreenWorks, Worx also specializes in a variety of high-quality home improvement and gardening tools, which offer great value. The WG303.1 electric chainsaw sticks true to that notion and is one of the top-rated products in its class.
So, is this chainsaw worth your money? Let’s find out.
- This chainsaw comes equipped with a 14.5 Amp motor that delivers exceptional performance, similar to gas-powered products.
- It comes with automatic oil lubrication and an auto-tension chain system which helps in preventing the chain from getting over-tightened.
- This product has a low kickback bar and built-in chain brake to protect you from kickback accidents.
- It features a 3 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty.
After hearing positive things about this product from Consumer Reports, I was quite excited about trying it out. So, as soon as I got my hands on the WG303.1, I headed over to the nearby woods to collect some firewood.
Now, since this is a corded electric chainsaw and not a battery-powered one, I had to take my inverter along with me. Sure, it wasn’t as convenient to use as the GreenWorks product I reviewed earlier, but it was far from an obnoxious experience.
Before I proceed with this review, let me address a common complaint with this device. Some users have faced problems while installing the chain.
And I must say, if you’re not experienced in handling chainsaws, you might want to check out some helpful chain installation videos first. It is a shame that Worx doesn’t provide proper instructions for this simple issue. As for me, I didn’t have any problems with that.
Anyway, I’m sure you’re all eager to find out more about its cutting performance. And that is one department where the Worx WG303.1 didn’t disappoint one bit. In fact, I would say this is just a tad better than the GreenWorks 20312.
Since this is an electric corded chainsaw, you don’t need to worry about battery life. Moreover, it is a fair bit lighter than cordless products.
Once again, no product is perfect, and this chainsaw has a problem with the auto-tensioning system. In fact, during my period of testing, the chain fell off three times. Now, it wasn’t much of a problem for me. But, I suspect people who aren’t accustomed to handling chainsaws might consider that a big drawback.
- Excellent cutting performance
- Well priced for what it offers
- The auto-tensioning system doesn’t work quite as well
- Instructions need to be better
In my opinion, if you’re adept at handling chainsaws, this is one of the best electric products you can buy in this price range. It is quite powerful, well priced, and offers all the features you would need.
However, if you are new to the world of chainsaws, I would suggest you skip this great product.
3. Remington RM1425 14-Inch Electric Chainsaw
A lot of people confuse the name Remington for the 200-year-old gun manufacturer, but let me clarify that this is an entirely different company. Interestingly enough, the Remington Power Tools brand is almost 100 years old. And their expertise in this industry is reflected in the RM1425 chainsaw. Not only is it a reliable and powerful product, but it offers jaw-dropping value.
Now, let’s find out whether it’s low price tag comes with any compromises.
- The 8 Amp electric motor offers decent cutting power.
- It features an external chain tension adjuster and a push-button boiler.
- This chainsaw is compact, lightweight and has a 14-inch low kickback bar and chain.
- The wraparound handguard protects your hand from the debris.
Let me get this right out of the way – the RM1425 is NOT an alternative to the products I reviewed earlier. It is nowhere near as powerful or as feature packed as the GreenWorks and Worx chainsaws.
But, that doesn’t mean it’s useless. Heck, it wouldn’t rank third on my list if it wasn’t any good now, would it? So, who exactly is the target audience for this chainsaw? In my opinion, it would be beginners who are looking to do relatively light yard work. In fact, the RM1425 comes fully assembled so that you don’t need to hassle with installing the chain.
For this review, I only focused on light cutting tasks as that’s exactly what most people purchasing this product would do. So, I began by trimming some small to medium sized branches. And I must say, it handled that task like a champ. I even tried cutting a small tree, and the RM1425 managed to do it with some difficulty.
Now, bear in mind, this chainsaw doesn’t come with any automatic oiler or auto chain adjustment system. But given the price point, you can’t really complain much. However, I would have liked to see Remington offer a tool-less chain adjustment system.
So, are there any other significant cons with this product? Well, some users have complained about the chain falling off on certain occasions. But, I would recommend you read the ‘Installing the Guide Bar and Saw Chain’ section of the guide thoroughly to prevent that from happening. In fact, I didn’t run into any such problem.
- Offers incredible value
- Powerful enough for light yard work
- Not suited for serious tasks
If you’re looking for a reliable, cost-effective solution for some light yard work, then your search ends here. The RM1425 offers everything you need for trimming the trees and keeping your yard in tiptop shape. And at this price, I don’t believe there is anything to complain.
4. Oregon CS1500 18-Inch Self-Sharpening Electric Chainsaw
Now, if you have delved into the world of chainsaws before, you must have heard of the brand Oregon. They are the largest manufacturer of chainsaw guide bars and chains. And they surely know a thing or two about making a high-quality product.
So, is the CS1500 anything special or should you be looking at other items on this list? Well, read along to find out.
- It comes with a high power 15 Amp motor, which should be sufficiently powerful for heavy duty tasks.
- This chainsaw features an exclusive self-sharpening system, known as PowerSharp.
- This product comes with low kickback guide bar and chain along with integrated chain brake.
- It features a tool-less chain tensioning system and an automatic oiler.
- It comes with 2 Year Consumer Warranty or 1 Year Professional Warranty.
I was really looking forward to trying out the Oregon CS1500. For one, it’s the company known for manufacturing high-quality and reliable guide bars and chains. However, the real reason for my interest in this product was the PowerSharp system of course.
Now, before I could test out the sharpening system, I had to wear out the chain of course. And I must say, after some extensive cutting sessions, I was quite impressed by the power. In my opinion, it is more powerful than the three chainsaw is ranked above it. So, why is it fourth on my list? Well, more on that later.
After those intense cutting sessions, I managed to wear out the chain. But, for the first time ever I was actually happy about it. It took just a few seconds to sharpen the chain using the PowerSharp system and honestly, it was almost as good as new.
Despite the excellent cutting performance and the ingenious PowerSharp system, this chainsaw will surely not be one of my favorites. And it’s all due to the CS1500’s major flaw.
So, what is it exactly? Well, during my extensive review period, I noticed the chain fall off quite a few times; much more often than it should. And unless you are quite adept at handling chainsaws, this surely isn’t the right product for you.
- Impressive cutting performance
- PowerSharp system is quite useful
- Chain comes off quite a few times
The CS1500 is an amazing product if you can ignore its serious flaw. But, it certainly isn’t easy to do so. In my opinion, you should only get this chainsaw if you’re highly experienced at handling one. For everyone else, I would recommend the other products.
5. Makita UC4051A 16-Inch Electric Chain Saw
For those who haven’t heard of the Makita brand, let me give you a brief analogy. You can think of it as the Lexus of the home improvement and power tools world. Their products are extremely high quality, reliable, and come with a premium price tag.
Now, let’s find out what makes the UC4051A special.
- The UC4051A comes with a built-in current limiter which protects the motor when excess current is supplied.
- It features tool-less blade and chain adjustments.
- The large trigger switch which comes enabled with soft start ensures smooth start-ups.
- It has a low kickback bar and electric chain brake.
- This chainsaw comes with a 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee along with a 1 Year Warranty.
I’ve been a fan of Makita products for as long as I can remember. In fact, I don’t suppose there’s been a single time where I’ve been let down by the brand. And so, needless to say, I was really looking forward to this review.
As soon as I unpacked the product, the thing that stood out to me most compared to the chainsaws I reviewed earlier, was the impressive build quality. This product is built like a tank and should last you ages, just like a Lexus would.
When it comes to the cutting performance, I would have to say this is surely the best electric chainsaw I’ve tested. It’s not only powerful but also smooth and quiet at the same time. It had absolutely no trouble in handling all the heavy-duty tasks I threw at it.
If the price was not a factor, this chainsaw would easily rank at the top of this list. But, that’s where it falters. And if your cutting requirements are quite basic, then I just can’t suggest spending the extra for this chainsaw.
- Excellent cutting performance
- Great build quality
- Highly reliable
- Comes with a 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee
- Price is quite high
If you’re in the market for a serious electric chainsaw and are not limited by your budget, then the Makita UC4051A is an absolute no-brainer. But, for everyone else, I would suggest looking at other products on this list.
6. DEWALT DCCS620P1 20V 12-Inch Cordless Chainsaw with 5 Ah Battery
If Makita was the Lexus of home improvement and power tools brands, DEWALT is surely Cadillac. Why, you ask? Well, for one it’s an American brand. And second of all, it makes high quality and reliable products. And the DEWALT DCCS620P1 sticks firmly to that notion.
So, can this product be your next purchase? Let’s find out.
- The high-efficiency brushless motor ensures smooth and quiet cutting performance.
- It features tool-less chain tensioning and bar tightening knob.
- It comes with a low kickback bar and electric chain brake.
- This chainsaw is compatible with DEWALT’s 20V max system of tools.
- It comes with a 3 Year Warranty.
Now, I haven’t used DEWALT products nearly as much as Makita’s, but from what I’ve heard from my good friend and colleague, they’re almost as good. And the good thing about DEWALT is that their products are slightly less expensive than Makita.
Compared to the Makita product I reviewed earlier, I felt that this chainsaw wasn’t as well built. But, don’t get me wrong here; it’s not bad by any means. In fact, compared to the other products on this list, I would say this feels more premium. That just speaks volumes of Makita’s quality.
When it comes to the cutting performance, this small 12-Inch chainsaw is quite a beast. Sure, it’s not as powerful or efficient as the 16-Inch or 18-Inch products I reviewed earlier, but you can easily chop small trees or large branches without a problem.
Moreover, its battery life is nothing short of remarkable. In fact, I would say this lasts slightly longer than the GreenWorks product I reviewed earlier. And on top of that, it is extremely lightweight. It weighs just 8.8 lbs, and let me tell you, it makes a significant difference, especially if you’re fatigued easily.
So, does the DEWALT DCCS620P1 have any shortcomings? Well, of course, it does. I noticed this chainsaw uses quite a bit of bar oil. And like the GreenWorks 20312 chainsaw, it leaks oil quite easily. So, I’d recommend not to store it with oil in the tank.
- Good cutting performance
- Excellent battery life
- Extremely lightweight and convenient to use
- Uses up quite a bit of bar oil
- Priced slightly on the higher side
Honestly, I was highly impressed by the small chainsaw, but I feel this is not for everyone. In my opinion, this product is perfect for the elderly or those with a petite build. However, if you’re just planning to use your chainsaw for some light yard work, then I believe you should look at cheaper solutions.
7. BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 40V Cordless Chainsaw with 2 Ah Battery
Now, most of the companies on this list offer a wide variety of home improvement and power tools. However, none of them can match the vast product range of BLACK+DECKER. From gardening tools, home appliances to cleaning solutions, power tools and much more, they have got an endless list.
So, is the BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 one of their shining knights or a disappointment? Read along to find out.
- This product is compatible with other 40V MAX Lithium-Ion Battery tools from BLACK+DECKER.
- It features a low kickback bar and chain.
- This chainsaw has a tool-less chain tensioning system and an automatic oiler.
- It comes with a 2 Year Warranty
Honestly, my experience with BLACK+DECKER has been quite hit and miss till this point. While their power tools impressed me quite a bit, I’ve had terrible experiences with some of their cooking appliances.
Thankfully, using the BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 chainsaw turned out to be quite a pleasant experience. Sure, it may not be as powerful as the DEWALT product I reviewed earlier, but it’s more than sufficient for handling yard work and cutting small trees.
As for the battery life, it turned out to be quite good as well, lasting me almost 2 ½ hours of use.
However, it’s just not as quiet and smooth as the DEWALT DCCS620P1. And just like the former, it has the same bar oil problem. Moreover, it is almost 2 lbs heavier than the DCCS620P1 chainsaw.
- Good cutting performance
- Decent battery life
- Offers good value
- Not as refined as higher-priced competitors
- It is slightly on the heavier side
Now, if you’re interested in the DEWALT DCCS620P1, it’s hard to recommend this product over the former. Sure, the DCCS620P1 comes at a premium, but you do get a high-quality product. On the other hand, if you’re on the lookout for a compact cordless chainsaw and the extra price just doesn’t appeal to you, then you’d be more than satisfied with this product.
Comprehensive Buyer’s Guide
Now that we’ve got the reviews out of the way, allow me to take you through a comprehensive electric chainsaw guide. The reason you need to read this guide is because there are just so many types of chainsaws out on the market today. And not knowing even the basics might mean a terrible investment.
Sure, electric chainsaws might be the best choice for homeowners (and non-commercial users), but these are few things you’ve got to bear in mind while shopping.
- Your strength
Electric chainsaws tend to be lighter than their gas-powered counterparts, but you still need to consider your strength and stamina. You go too heavy, you’ll end up exhausted; you choose too light and it might feel like you don’t have any control over the cutting. I can manage 15-20 lbs, but for most folks, less than 10 lbs would be perfect.
If lifting the chainsaw model makes you feel like The Terminator, picking up a Gattling Minigun, then you’ve already lost the battle.
People choose electric models not just for power and ease-of-use, but also for added convenience. The product you choose should ideally be free of wires, easy to recharge, and offer enough flexibility to turn different ways while in use. When you’re cutting logs or branches, the less distraction there is, better your experience will be.
- Noise and vibration
Nobody likes noise! Or else, it wouldn’t have been called “noise,” duh! Fact: chainsaws make noise. All of them do. However, the noise produced by electric models is far lower than other variants. So, try and go for the right products if you don’t want your neighbors calling the cops. Your ears will also thank you for it.
Vibration is another factor you must be wary of. Less vibration always equates to more control. If you haven’t used chainsaws before, be prepared to deal with some vibration regardless of the model you choose.
- Maintenance and storage
Electric chainsaws are sophisticated equipment and require care to stay in top shape. So, be sure to read all the maintenance and upkeep instructions before storing it away. Never skip out on this part if you want your investment to last. Oh! And about storage, keep them away from children even if your chainsaw has built-in safety features.
- Quality over price
Don’t cheap out when buying tools such as chainsaws. These machines contain fast-moving parts that can easily turn hazardous if they have not been manufactured according to the standards. Don’t buy knock offs’ of famous brands or choose the lowest priced model for the sake of saving a few dollars.
Believe me; it’s not worth it.
Safety Considerations Tips
This is one section YOU MUST READ. Yeah, the caps were on purpose. If you know anything about chainsaws, you’re probably aware that these are mean, scary machines serial killers use to hunt their victims. Unless you want to fall prey to your callousness and end up with an injury, a dismembered limb (or worse), I highly suggest you keep your eyes glued here.
- To avoid injury, always put safety first. Wear protective eye gear, take care of your hand and feet positioning, and keep safe distance from the blade.
- Do not use the electric chainsaw when intoxicated or when you’re not alert for whatever reason.
- Don’t miss out wearing heavy-duty boots, chaps, and protective hand gloves. Don’t ignore you ear’s plea; use ear protection as well.
- To reduce risk, look for electric chainsaws that come with low kickback chain.
- Do not attempt to cut through anything that’s positioned at your chest level or higher.
- Always fire up the chainsaw placed on the ground, with your foot placed on its rear handle.
- Keep wires, extension cord away from the chainsaw at all times.
- Avoid wearing loose or garments that hang when using a chainsaw.
These are some of the safety tips I can think of at the moment. If you have any more, let me know in the comments section below.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What’s the advantage of electric chainsaws over gas-powered models?
A. While gas-powered chainsaws are more powerful than electric variants, they also produce more fume and noise. Electric saws are ideal for non-commercial use.
Q. I don’t like to deal with cords. Will an electric chainsaw be the right choice for me?
A. Probably not, if you’re going for the traditional corded models. The power cord does pose as a restriction, but that’s the price you pay for buying an electric-powered chainsaw. Otherwise, you have to buy something that runs on batteries, which of course comes with its own set of limitations.
Q. How eco-friendly are electric chainsaws?
A. A lot if you compare to gas-based saws. Electric models produce none of the fumes a gas model would while running.
And there you have it folks! My guide for the best electric chainsaws for home use. I had to go through my fair share of bad experiences to bring you this information, so here’s hoping you can skip the mistakes I made. Enjoyed reading this guide? Well, don’t hesitate to drop a comment below.
