The 5 Best Gas Hedge Trimmers in 2019: Reviews by BackyardGadget

Approx Reading Time: 16 minutes

A well-maintained garden is an amazing feature for any suburban home to have.

And the more attractive the garden, the more pressing is the need to have it regularly maintained.

But there are some areas of the yard that are quite difficult to control and need more attention than the other aspects.

Hedges are one of them; if left unchecked for long, they get unkempt and ruin the overall aesthetics of your garden.

That is why hedge trimmers have grown in much popularity over the last few years. And even the customers at the store have been opting more for the trimmers, as it is more practical and saves a lot of time.

However, choosing the right trimmer that ideally fits your needs is a daunting task.

But I’m here today to help you out with just that.

Poulan Pro PR2322 22-Inch 23cc 2 Cycle Gas Powered Dual Sided Hedge Trimmer

Poulan Pro is one of the pioneers of modern-day garden treatment solutions. From lawn mowers to chipper shredders and log splitters, they have them all.

And it is not surprising that their PR2322 is by far one of the most popular hedge trimming devices that boasts an amazing cutting power.

Standout features:

  • 23cc 2 cycle powerful full crank engine quickly cuts through the toughest of hedges and leaves.
  • 22” wide blades with 1” diameter legs provide a larger surface that significantly reduces the time of the cutting process.

The comfort grip comes with a rotating handle and advanced vibration proof features that provide the user with a lot of control.

Pros

Pros
  • A powerful cutting capability that allows the trimmer to go through any type of hedge.
  • Large cutting surface that makes the trimming process faster.
  • Good grip and lightweight build makes controlling easier.
  • Very affordable.

Cons

Cons
  • Too much power for the amateur user.

How was my experience?

The Poulan Pro was the one I tried on my mother’s backyard. She was having a lot of hedge problems off late (to be honest, she never really takes much care of her garden), and the bushes had gotten quite thick and unkempt.

The problems extended to the point where blackbirds started to nest there, and my mom was having quite some trouble organizing social gatherings in her garden.

So, I decided on the PR2322 for its amazing power and cutting ability. And what seemed to be a difficult job at first (because of the thickness of the hedges) became significantly easy and effortless.

And the 22” wide blades with 1” diameter legs allowed me to complete the job in a matter of hours.

But this fantastic cutting power comes at the cost of control. Even though the trimmer is lightweight (around 11 pounds) and has a comfort grip, I would not recommend it for first-timers.

It’s more for the experienced users who know what they are doing, as this amount of power can quickly go out of hand for the amateur homesteader.

Verdict

If you’re quite adept at maintaining your garden and have used a lot of gardening tools before, especially trimmers, then the Poulan Pro PR2322 is sure to fit all your needs. With a 23cc 2 cycle engine, its power is indeed hard to beat.

Husqvarna 122HD60 21.7cc Gas 23.7-in Dual Action Hedge Trimmer 9665324-02

Husqvarna is quite famous for manufacturing gardening tools that along with being extremely user-friendly are great value for money as well.

And their 122HD60 hedge trimmer is no stranger to that fact. It is one of the most convenient to use the trimmer on my list and perhaps also one of the best in utility.

Standout Features:

  • The 122HD60 comes with a smart start engine and starter that switches the trimmer on with just the flick of a button.
  • The in-built air purge system helps remove air from the carburetor and fueling system making the 122HD60 quite energy efficient.
  • Adjustable rear handle allows the trimmer to have fantastic cutting versatility. Trimming the sides and the top of the hedges becomes extremely easy.

Pros

Pros
  • Easy to use smart start.
  • Adjustable handle for versatile trimming.
  • Good fuel efficiency.

Cons

Cons
  • Small cutting surface increases trimming time.

How was my experience?

The 122HD60 is my go-to gardening tool. It is the trimmer that fits my needs the best and is also the one I use for my own backyard. Its amazing user convenience is what sets it apart from the rest of its competition, and is also the feature that absolutely got me sold when I used it for the first time.

A lot of modern-day trimmers come with a string-pull start mechanism, which is not at all user-friendly and often jam and stop functioning after a few days of use. The 122HD60, on the other hand, comes with a smart start engine that allows you to switch the trimmer on with minimal effort.

Cutting versatility is important to me as well, adjusting the angle of your trimming motion to suit the needs of your garden is essential for any form of yard maintenance. The 122HD60’s adjustable handles let me cut the hedges the way I want while at the same time being very fuel efficient.

But even with its dual action trimming motion, the 122HD60 is not all that fast in getting the job done. Its wide blades don’t provide all that much of a cutting surface, though its cycle speed makes it decently fast, but not as fast as I would have liked.

Verdict

If trimming time is not all that much of an issue for you, then I highly recommend that you go for the Husqvarna 122HD60. It is a great bang for the buck with fantastic utility and features.

Tanaka TCH22EBP2 21cc 2-Cycle Gas Hedge Trimmer

If you’re looking to get a hedge trimmer that caters more to professional users and boasts a wide range of commercial grade features. Then perhaps the Tanaka TCH22EBP2 can be your pick for the day.

Its power and cutting efficiency makes it a very popular choice for many professional landscapers

Standout Features:

  • Reliably powerful 21.1 cc trimmer that has a Pure Fire 2 cycle engine which makes the thick-hedge trimming process significantly easier.
  • The TCH22EBP2 has built-in 24” commercial grade cutting blades that face three different directions which in turn allows dual reciprocation.
  • S- Start technology minimizes the force required to pull-start by almost 50%.
  • The 5-way adjustable handle makes hedge trimming a comparatively comfortable process.

Pros

Pros
  • Reliable power with an above average gas tank.
  • Highly adjustable handle for trimming comfort.
  • Professional and commercial grade build.

Cons

Cons
  • Not ideal for domestic use.
  • Trimming the thickest hedges may take some time.

How was my experience?

One of the most underrated hedge trimmers out there in the market.

I had not initially planned on putting the Japanese Tanaka TCH22EBP2 hedge trimmer on my list, as I didn’t find it to be all that popular with the customers in the departmental store. And to be perfectly honest, it’s lightweight pull-start design wasn’t all that appealing to me.

But my neighbor highly recommended it, and as he owned a yard treatment company himself, I thought that he must know what he was talking about. So I gave the TCH22EBP2 a try, and to my pleasant surprise, this trimmer gave me one of the best hedge trimming experiences.

It’s lightweight built (around 10 pounds) was easy to maneuver, and as it came with an adjustable handle, I was able to rotate into 5 different positions. From upright to sideways, whatever direction I was facing or cutting, or whichever hand I preferred to hold the trigger with I was able to get the job done comfortably.

Its 21.1 cc engine was reliably powerful as well but was still not as powerful as the Poulan Pro I used. And trimming the thickest hedge took up a considerable amount of time, but it wasn’t all that much of a deal breaker.

Verdict

The Tanaka TCH22EBP2 is one of the very few trimmers that can fuse performance with usability while at the same time providing excellent cutting capacity. More inclined for professional use, the trimmer comes with 3 different (optional) blade lengths that cater to a variety of user needs.

Echo HC-152 Gas Powered Hedge Trimmer

Another hedge trimmer with the professional user in mind. But what sets the Echo HC-152 apart from the Tanaka, is that it perfectly caters to domestic trimming needs as well.

Even with a decently light build, it can maintain an impressive cutting ability, while at the same time boasting easy to use features.

Standout Features:

  • The Echo HC-152 is powered by a 21.2cc 2-stroke engine which gets the blades to work fast, reducing the trimming time.
  • The durable build comes with a unique filtration system that keeps the engine clean and running for years to come.
  • Vibration absorption handles, that reduces the stress on the arms increasing cutting accuracy.

Pros

Pros
  • Incredible engine durability.
  • Vibration absorbing handles with an ergonomic comfort grip.
  • 2 cc engine with easy to use features.

Cons

Cons
  • Rigid, non-adjustable handle.

How was my experience?

The  Echo HC-152 was the very first hedge trimmer that I used, while I was still new to the field of garden maintenance. And what made the HC-152 so very reliable to me was its easy to use features that catered to both amateurs and professionals alike.

It’s an absolute all-rounder, with a little bit of something to offer to every homesteader. But in my opinion, its most promising feature is perhaps the engine’s durability.

Excessive air pressure and moisture are the biggest enemies of a gas based engine. The Echo HC-152 solves this problem by providing the engine hatchet with a unique air filtration system. This system locks out the moisture and allows the engine to run in its most optimal condition for years.

The vibration absorbing handles was another plus I really liked. They were ergonomically built with a comfort grip, that didn’t let me wear out my arms too soon.

But the handles of the  Echo HC-152 don’t allow any form of adjusting, nor does it swivel in any way. The rigid handles were quite inconvenient for me when it came to trimming the top and side of the hedges. No matter which way I was facing I had to hold the trimmer a certain way to get the most out of it.

Verdict

The Echo HC-152 hedge trimmer is an amazing gardening tool to have for both household and commercial use. And along with a 2-year warranty, it truly is one of the better all-around hedge trimmers out there today.

Husqvarna 966532302 Double Sided Homeowner Hedge Trimmer

The 966532302 is Husqvarna’s smaller and more compact hedge trimming model, but not as powerful when compared to the 122HD60.

It tends more to household use than professional and commercial purposes and is built specifically with the amateur gardener in mind.

Standout Features:

  • A very lightweight build that is extremely easy to carry and maneuver around the backyard.
  • Comes with a 100% approval rating from the National Home Gardening Club in the categories of ease of use, quality, design, and performance.
  • Fantastic low noise engine design that will not disturb any of the residents of your house or your neighbors when in use.
  • Stop switch automatically returns to its original position for easier starting.

Pros

Pros
  • Light body build and design that makes it very easy to control the trimmer.
  • Low noise engine design.
  • User-friendly and convenient features.

Cons

Cons
  • Not as powerful as most of its competitors.

How was my experience?

Husqvarna’s 966532302 was something that was recommended to me by one of my regular customers. Matthew lives quite close to the shorelines of South Carolina, and the homes there are known for their small yet tastefully designed backyards.

And the 966532302 was the one trimmer that suits the needs of his garden the best. So when I tried out the trimmer for myself, I realized why it was so popular with the small suburban homesteaders.

Its small and compact design is easy to maneuver and transport across the yard, while the light design additionally provides great trimming control over most hedges. It may not boast as much power as the rest of the trimmers on the list, but to be fair it was made with the smaller backyards in mind.

What it lacks in power, it more than compensates for in its user-friendly features. And it’s no surprise that it comes highly rated by the National Home Gardening Club with full marks in the fields of ease of use, quality, design, and performance.

And the low engine noise is just the icing on the cake. If you have a noise sensitive family and neighbors, then this trimmer can be the ideal fit for you.

Verdict

When it comes to the hedge maintenance needs of the smaller backyards, the Husqvarna 966532302 can indeed become the homesteader’s best friend. It’s light, compact and practical and caters to a variety of user needs.

Buyer’s guide to picking the best Gas Hedge Trimmer

From fantastic utility to impressive ease of use, the modern day market of hedge trimmers has a lot to offer their customers. So it’s not surprising if a customer is confused in choosing the one that will best fit their needs.

But here are a few pointers that you should keep in mind that can significantly help you with your choices.

Trimmer Blade

The length of the blades is the most important thing you should look out for when making your trimmer purchase. Longer blades can boost the speed of your trimming job no doubt, making it significantly faster. But they have a downside when it comes to piling additional weight on the trimmer.

The extra weight can put a lot of strain on your arms quickly wearing them out. And the longer blades are also inconvenient when it comes to trimming the smaller hedges and ornamenting them in a certain shape.

Double-sided blades are also an excellent feature to have, and a lot of modern-day trimmers support this mechanism. They make the trimmer more versatile allowing them to effortlessly do intricate jobs like shaping the hedges and giving them a unique design. But they are slightly heavier than single-sided blade trimmers as well.

Tooth spacing between the blades is also an essential factor to consider. Theoretically speaking, a hedge trimmer will effortlessly go through any sort of branch that can fit within its teeth. So in my opinion, a hedge trimmer with a 3/4 “ gap between the teeth is the ideal choice.

Trimming Comfort

What affects operational comfort and trimming accuracy the most are vibrations, handles, and weight balance. And this was something that I learn the hard way.

Once I had bought a trimmer that only had one handle and a single power switch. Needless to say, it didn’t provide me with a comfortable user experience at all. Trimming the sides and the top of the hedge bush was difficult, to begin with, but this trimmer made the task almost impossible.

Hence, it’s preferable to go for a trimmer that has at least two handles with multiple power switches. That can allow you to use it for different orientations.

Dual-action blades (not double-sided blades) can also be a great feature to have. Unlike single-action blades that have one moving blade and one stationary blade. The dual-action ones basically have two simultaneously moving blades that cut against each other from opposite directions.

This way, the dual-action blades significantly cause fewer vibrations than their single-action counterparts. And even though the dual action might weigh a bit more, the lesser vibrations caused will not wear your arms out too much.

Trimmer Weight

If you aren’t equipped with the right trimmer, then long hedge trimming jobs can cause you immense fatigue with just a few hours of work. And the heavier the trimmer is, the faster will you tire yourself out leading to exhaustion and tired limbs.

Hence, the weight of the trimmer is quintessential when it comes to long trimming sessions. But there are also some positives you should keep in mind about trimmer weight as well.

A heavier trimmer isn’t always all bad. If it’s just a slightly heavier model than the rest of its competition but provides higher power and utility, then it would be the ideal choice. More power and faster blade action can get the job done much quicker, and you will not feel the added exhaustion of the extra weight.

Efficiency and speed are crucial for proper yard maintenance.

Noise Cancellation

Gas based hedge trimmer engines produce a lot of noise when they aren’t equipped with any noise reduction features. A low sound emitting splitter is essential if you have noise sensitive people at home or neighbors who are very easily disturbed and are waiting for the slightest chance to complain.

The average gas trimmer emits noise around 97 to 103 dBa which is similar to that of an air jet flying overhead at a 1000 feet. And it is also approximately double the noise of what an electric trimmer produces.

In such cases either you go for hearing protection, or choose a gas trimmer that has noise reduction features. And there are a lot of gas trimmers today that come with amazing noise cancellation features that soak up the sound vibrations coming from the engine.

Models that support quick start features are a good example of such trimmers that emit less noise.

Get trimming!

Garden maintenance is not the easiest task in the world, and it gets more difficult when you aren’t able to pick the right tool for the job. But I hope my user guide today was able to help you choose the right trimming tool that fits your need the best.

Till next time!
