Top 5 Electric Log Splitters in 2019

If you ask me, cutting a heavy log with a wedge or an axe can be a rather cumbersome task.

Not only does it take up an immense amount of time, but the physical labor that goes behind it bears too little fruit compared to the amount of blood and sweat you pour into it.

But, believe me when I say, that this is where a powerful log splitter comes in. And the regular customers at my hardware store are of the same opinion as well.

However, with a vast number of splitters available on the market, it can get somewhat difficult to pick the right one, so I am here today to help you out with just that.

Electric log splitter reviews

As a power tool enthusiast myself, I have had a lot of experience with electric log splitters over the years.

And, in this splitter review, I would like to list out my top 5, which are sure to appeal to you as much as they appeal to me.

1. WEN 56207 6.5-Ton Electric Log Splitter with Stand

The WEN 56207 6.5-Ton Electric Log Splitter is made with user convenience in mind. It’s easy to use and convenient for the older generation of customers. And this was also the reason why I gifted this to my father in law during his 62nd birthday.

With his traditional ‘farmhouse style’ home, the living room harbors a spectacular fireplace, and that is why he makes it a point to gather firewood from his backyard every winter. But his previous splitter was getting rather old and rusty, not to mention his ever growing back issues made it difficult for him to split wood.

The WEN 56207 on the other hand, is very easy to manage even though it has a robust build. Plus, the elevated cradle makes it quite easy for the back as the user doesn’t have to bend during the splitting process.

Standout Features

  • The eco-friendly electric engine produces no harmful gaseous emissions.
  • Comes with a 34-inches elevated stand that allows splitting at various height levels and improves ease of use.
  • Presence of a 15A motor allows the splitter to generate a log splitting force of around 13,000 pounds.
thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Cradle stand improves user convenience.
  • Nice set of wheels for excellent mobility.
  • Hassle free engine start.

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • 15A motor though powerful, isn’t as powerful as gas based engines.

How was my experience?

More on the grounds of my father in law’s experience than mine really. The WEN 56207 is a splitter that he absolutely adores.

And the feature that he found to be the most convenient by far was the electric engine and the cradle stand. As a patient of spondylosis, he was hardly able to bend for a longer stretch of time.

The cradle stand allowed the splitter to be elevated up to 34-inches above the ground and as a result, it didn’t permit much stress to accumulate on the lower back. This made him turn his waste tree trunks to firewood effortlessly, and along with the powerful 15A motor he was able to achieve a significantly large pile of it in a matter of hours.

Electric engines don’t require much maintenance, unlike their gas based alternatives. They run on electricity and causes no carbon monoxide emissions or clogged carburetors; just plug it in the socket, and you’re good to go.

And along with the easy one-button start, my father in law didn’t have much trouble using it indoors in his garage space as well.

Verdict

The WEN 56207 6.5-Ton Electric Log Splitter can be your pick for the day if you’re looking for a very user-friendly and green solution to make some firewood. It is one of the best value for money splitters in today’s market.

2. Boss Industrial ES7T20 Electric Log Splitter, 7-Ton

The second electric splitter on my list today, but in no way inferior to the WEN 56207 when it comes to utility and features. With the ES7T20 electric log splitter, Boss Industrials have taken the previous models and given them a much-needed power boost.

It now offers even more force but with the same portable and user-friendly build. The convenient features come with a durable design as well, and its high levels of portability make one of the most portable log splitters a homeowner can ask for.

Standout Features

  • A 2 HP electric motor that is capable of generating up to 7 tons of splitting force.
  • Allows one-handed usage, making it easy for even the most amateur operators.
  • As the ram returns back to the starting position automatically, splitting time is by almost half.
thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Electric motor with 2 HP splitting force and returning ram allows for a faster cycle speed.
  • One-handed handling makes for fantastic user convenience.
  • Steel wedges keep the splitter durable.
  • Compact design is highly portable.

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • Not the best option for those with back and knee issues.

My Experience

The ES7T20 electric log splitter is the one my neighbor uses. As his backyard is filled with slopes and undulating surfaces, high mobility in a splitter is quite important to him, and the ES7T20 provides him with just that.

Much lighter than the WEN 56207 in build and design, the ES7T20 weighs at just about 128 pounds and only as tall as 37-inches. Though it doesn’t support the feature to be towed, its amazingly compact build keeps it lightweight and small enough to be pulled by its front handles, allowing one to split wood wherever they choose.

But this very portable height of 37-inches doesn’t come with a cradle stand, and one will have to bend quite often to press the levers and start the splitting process. This can be quite inconvenient for users with back issues and knee problems.

The eco-friendly electric build also comes with one-handed operation features, allowing the splitter to be a big hit with amateurs and professionals alike.

The ES7T20 is able to produce a cycle time of 14 seconds, which is quite low for an electric splitter of its class. Again, this is all because of the hydraulic ram that gets back to its original position after each cycle.

Check out this video from the manufacturer if you want to see it in action:

Verdict

Though an electric splitter model may not keep up with a gas-powered one when it comes to power, the Boss ES7T20 can still reduce splitting time by almost half. With great torque and a solid yet portable frame, the ES7T20 can become anyone’s go-to splitter.

3. Southland Outdoor Power Equipment SELS60 6 Ton Electric Log Splitter

There are a lot of 6-ton log splitters in the market, but the Southland Outdoor Power Equipment SELS60 has most of them beat when it comes to splitting prowess and speed.

Another versatile electric splitter on the list today, the SELS60 has a 1.75 HP splitting force that drives the machine even under the harshest conditions, making it just perfect for both home and commercial use.

Standout Features

  • The heavy-duty 1.75 HP engine with the 15 amp induction motor is able to deliver a decent amount of splitting force.
  • For improved mobility, the ES7T20 comes with 7″ wheels along with a vertical position configuration to provide maneuverability and easier storage
  • The biggest splitting jobs are effortlessly complete in a matter of hours because of a fantastic 18-second cycle time
  • The integrated stroke limiter features allow short stroke and long stroke adjustments for smaller and bigger logs respectively.
thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Spectacular 18-second cycle speed that significantly speeds up the splitting process.
  • 7” wheels make the splitter quite mobile and portable.
  • Stroke limiter helps cut logs of different widths and lengths.

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • Sometimes requires two hands for operation.

My Experience

Right off the bat, what caught my eye about the Southland Outdoor Power Equipment SELS60 Log Splitter, was its versatility when it came to splitting logs of different sizes. The majority of the log splitters are not able to handle logs of certain lengths and widths, but the SELS60 comes specially equipped with a stroke limiter, that is integrated into its working mechanisms.

The stroke limiter allows the splitter to make adjustments to its strokes; may it be very short or very long, which primarily depends on the size of the wood. The wood cradle is adjustable as well, hence the SELS60’s splitting operation is not limited to a particular log size.

Another impressive aspect that the SELS60 boasts is its amazing cycle time. Though the 1.75 HP splitting force is reliable, it may not be as powerful as a lot of the gas based and higher ton splitters.

But the amazing cycle time of 18 seconds does more than just make up for that lack of power. It cut my splitting time by more than half of what a manual process would have taken, and along with the convenient 7” wheels, I was able to take the splitter for cutting right at the source.

However, the lack of single-handed operations was quite a bummer. The need for using two hands for operating might be a safer option, but it’s not all that convenient. And for the thicker logs and knotted wood, it might even take up to two people to hold and manage the round.

Verdict

Smart, portable, reliably sturdy and powerful, the Southland Outdoor Power Equipment SELS60 6 Ton Electric Log Splitter gave me one of the fasted wood splitting experiences. Though not as powerful as some of its competitors, its speed is more than enough to ornament your home in a matter of hours.

4. Powerhouse XM-380 Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter, 7-Ton

Powerhouse has been a go-to for all my power tool needs for years now. Their products are not only pocket-friendly but extremely reliable and easy to use as well. Known for their production of commercial grade products, the XM-380 Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter is explicitly made to cater to professional log splitting needs and demands.

But this doesn’t mean that it’s not fit for domestic use as well. Its safety features and convenient user design make it quite popular with a lot of suburban homes that have thicker trees in their yards.

Standout Features

  • 3 HP motor produces 7 tons of splitting force, and 35000 RPM; can split 100 logs in under an hour.
  • Can cut logs which are up to 21-inches in length and 12-inches in diameter.
  • Integrated safety feature that retracts the blades once the hands are removed from the handles.
thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Unique safety feature that retracts the blade when hands leave the lever.
  • Extremely reliable splitting force with a faster than average cycle time.
  • Durable professional grade build.
  • Caters to both professional and domestic use.

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • Single-handed operations are unavailable.

My Experience

The Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter is the one I use for my own backyard. And at the risk of sounding biased, let me just add that it is by far one of the best log splitters I have ever used. It is as powerful as it is sturdy, and with acceptable amounts of portability and cycle time, it has been my favorite companion for all yard maintenance works for a very long time now.

One of the critical features of the XM-380 that I really adore is the built-in safety feature. Though it comes with dual hand operations, which may not be as convenient, but it is vital for staying safe while splitting wood.

During the splitting process, accidents can happen at any time. From the hand slipping between the wedges to flying wood chunks poking an eye out, injuries can come in various forms, but, this safety feature prevents the majority of them.

As soon as the hands leave the levers, the blades immediately retract, thereby significantly reducing the chances of injuring your hands. This also makes it a lot safer to use when you have children around.

Apart from the safety feature, the splitting force is also incredible and comes with a rather fast cycle time, that can split about 100 logs in under an hour. Assembling it is reasonably easy as well.

Verdict

Commercial grade electric splitters that also cater to domestic use is very rare to find. And the Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter is a fantastic bang for the buck, that is capable of fulfilling a variety of user needs and demands.

5. Goplus 1500W 6 Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter

Goplus and their range of power tool products are quite well known for their precision and how effectively they can turn the most unkempt gardens into the most ornamented ones.

The 1500W 6 Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter is the latest addition to their splitter line-up and comes with the best in-line design and wood cutting ingenuity.

With a durable build, a 1500W motor and a generously adjustable wood cradle, the Goplus clocks a log travel distance of around 15.5-inches, making it ideal for logs up to 16-inches in size.

Standout Features

  • Durable external body which makes the splitter highly resistant to moisture and physical damage.
  • 2 big wheels come with comfort grip handles that improve transportation and the splitting process.
  • Safety features include a Class-B insulation, making it safe for anyone who is new to the splitting scene.
thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Extremely clean splitting process, that goes through the toughest knots.
  • Water resistant build is not susceptible to rusting.
  • Class-B insulation features make it safe and easy to use for beginners.
  • Compact build, is user-friendly and portable.

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • Pump housing is closer to the ground and susceptible to damage.

My Experience

In my experience, thick knots within the logs are one of the biggest enemies for log splitters. And more often than not, when it came to splitting these knots, the blades of the standard splitter would either jam or get damaged. Even if the wedges had re-sharpening features, knots were something that not all splitters are able to handle.

The Goplus on the other hand, has one of the cleanest splitting processes, and this was especially true when it came to wood knots. With a 1500W motor power and a 6-ton splitting force, the Goplus made quick work of the most stubborn knots.

Durability and user safety features are the other key aspects of this splitter. As it has a Class-B insulation, the Goplus is almost perfectly safe and secure to use for any beginner. The steel body is quite durable and long lasting and its high resistance to water makes it perfectly suitable for splitting moist green logs or even for basement storage.

As it comes with 2 bigger than average wheels and comfort grip handles, the compactly designed Goplus is quite portable as well. But unfortunately, these wheels are attached to the pump housing, which might cause significant issues in the long run.

As the pump housing is kept closer to the ground, it has a high chance of getting damaged if it bumps into stairs or loose rocks on the ground. When using it myself, I had to be constantly wary of how I was transporting it, which was slightly inconvenient really.

Verdict

Apart from the few issues with transportation, I believe that the Goplus 1500W 6 Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter can be the perfect entry-level log splitter for anyone who is new to the log splitting scene.

How to pick the perfect log splitter

Well, I am not going to sit here and pretend that there is a perfect splitter out there, that is capable of catering to all sorts of customer demands. For each log splitter is unique in itself with its own set of pros and cons, and it’s always important to look out for those features that will suit your needs the best.

So, here are a few things to keep in mind, before going for that purchase.

What is your Ideal Price Range?

Setting a realistic price range for a splitter is essential, especially being aware of the maximum upper limit that you’re willing to spend. This will eliminate a lot of the models that don’t fit your budget and can significantly limit your options and help in your decision.

How often will you be using it?

The splitter you pick will directly reflect the purposes you are going to be using it for. If you’re going to be splitting just a few logs in your backyard to clear up your garden, then it’s unnecessary to invest in a big splitter that has a lot of power and sturdy build. Manual splitters are ideal for such uses.

If you’re planning to use it more frequently, like regularly acquiring firewood then an automatic, electric or gas based splitter would fit your needs the best.

The Perfect Amount of Splitting Force

All yards are different, from the shape, to the size, to the type of trees and plants it harbors. So, the splitter you are willing to buy, should have a splitting force that specifically caters to the kind of trees that grow in your property.

Electric splitters are cheaper but not as powerful as gas based ones. So if you’re not planning to work with hardwood and extremely long logs and stumps, then investing in an electric type should be the way to go.

Apart from wood thickness, wood knots are another essential aspect to consider. The knottier the wood in your yard, the more powerful should be the splitter.

Overall Maintenance Costs

This was something I learned the hard way when I was still a beginner to wood splitting.

Gas based log splitters are way more expensive to maintain than the electric ones. And the cost can stack up significantly over the years. The electric splitters, on the other hand, don’t need much maintenance, as the motor always stays in shape.

But as the electric splitter has multiple moving parts, the risk of damage and malfunction is rather high. And the cost of repair can be rather expensive compared to the gas models.

Compactness and Portability

This feature may not be relevant to many, but it is crucial for those who need to carry the splitter around a lot and cut trees at their source. A small compact build can also allow one to store the splitter in a garage or a shed, and also ready for use indoors.

Electric models are perfect for indoor use, as they run on electricity, they don’t produce any gaseous emissions. So the chances of air pollution are nil, and all you need to do to run it is to plug it into the wall socket.

Questions I get Asked Frequently

How much do I have to pay for maintenance of an electric splitter?

Not much, as an electric splitter needs much lower maintenance than gas based models. The motor hardly needs any upkeep as well, nor do the carburetors clog; it runs on electricity and is very pocket-friendly. But its parts are prone to damage and replacement or repair might be expensive.

Which splitter can best suit my needs?

Well, as I have stated earlier in the buyer’s guide; the splitter you pick should depend on what you’re going to use it for, your budget, and which feature can suit your needs the best.

My backyard is filled with elm and hardwood trees, do I go for an electric splitter?

If the trees that primarily grow in your property are hardwood, then I would not recommend an electric splitter. Yes, they may be cheaper and much more convenient to use, but they lack the required amount of power to split hardwood, that a gas splitter possesses.

Happy Splitting!

For acquiring firewood every fall, or just cleaning up your garden, a log splitter can make your job a whole lot easier. They are smart, practical, powerful and come with features that are capable of fulfilling a vast array of user needs.
